 Doctoral School at SGH

The purpose of SGH Doctoral School is to provide support in conducting the research needed for writing and defending doctoral theses as well as to convey cutting-edge world knowledge in the selected areas of social sciences and research methodology in terms of the learning outcomes of qualification level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework.
 
 
 
 

SGH is authorised to confer the scientific degree of doktor of social sciences in the following fields:
  • Economics and Finance,
  • Management and Quality Sciences,
  • Political and Administration Sciences.

Education in the Doctoral School shall comprise: a study curriculum and an Individual Research Plan.

The study curriculum in the Doctoral School shall be offered in three fields and in five programmes:
  • Economics and Finance in the scope of Economics, 
  • Economics and Finance in the scope of Finance,
  • Political and Administration Sciences,
  • Management and Quality Sciences with instruction in English

On studying in the Doctoral School
 
Education in the Doctoral School shall last 8 semesters.
 
The study curriculum in the Doctoral School shall include the following courses:
 
A. Common for all education programmes:  the load of 74-94 hours including 74 obligatory hours:
1. Philosophy of Science 
2. Ethics in Science 
3. Methodology of Social Research
4. Building Research Teams
5.  The Art of Teaching and Presenting
B. Major (3-4 courses recommended), the load of 180-240 hours, including 180 obligatory hours
C. Minor (2-4 courses recommended), the load of 60-120 hours, including 60 obligatory hours
D. Complementary (2-4 courses recommended), the load of 60-120 hours, elective
E. Doctoral seminar, obligatory, the load of 60 hours
 
Total:  464-694 hours
 
Individual Research Plan (obligatory) (IPB) - prepared by the doctoral candidate in cooperation with the supervisor (supervisors) and the assistant supervisor, if appointed.
 
The Doctoral School shall educate high-class specialists for:
  • science, including higher education schools and scientific institutions,
  • business practice, in particular financial sector companies and institutions,
  • government and local government institutions, international organisations.

The participant of the Doctoral School, according to the selected study curriculum, shall gain advanced level knowledge of modern macroeconomics and microeconomics, management, finance, politics and administration, as well as current economic theories of enterprise and international economics.

A doctoral candidate shall acquire the skills of conducting independent research through learning about methodology, quantitative and qualitative methods in scientific research as well as of popularising research findings and shall develop the necessary social competences. 

 

 Supplementary Admission to the Doctoral School at SGH

 

Applicants

An applicant entered into the admission procedure should be a holder of the professional title of magister, magister inżynier or its equivalent or of a diploma of completion of a first cycle programme or should hold a document confirming the completion of the third year of a long cycle graduate programme for persons stipulated in art. 186.2 of the PSWiN act (the act of 20 July 2018 - the Law on Higher Education and Science; Journal of Laws item 1668, as amended).

 Admission procedure

Applicant registration shall be conducted using the On-line School Registration System (ISR) available in the SGH website https://rejestrator.sgh.waw.pl/recruitment/
A correct applicant registration in ISR shall be a necessary condition for starting his/her admission procedure.
 
Admission to the Doctoral School shall involve two stages:
First admission stage: substantial analysis of the documents submitted by the applicant and a decision of qualification of the candidate for the second stage – with no candidate participation.
Second admission stage: a structured interview with the candidate.
  
At a justified request of the applicant Chair of the Admission Board may agree to conduct the interview using means of electronic communication with sound and image transmission.
 

​Assessment criteria

 Assessment criteria and scores in particular criteria in the admission procedure:

  1. doctoral dissertation research proposal: 0-35 points;

  2. academic achievements, including academic publications – articles, chapters in books, papers              at  academic conferences: 0-5 points;

  3. implementation of research projects: 0-5 points;

  4. opinion on the applicant’s research competences, issued by an independent research worker who meets the conditions required of a supervisor as specified in the Act: 0-5 points;

  5. grade in the academic graduation diploma:
    1) grade in the diploma in the field of social sciences: ​​

         i. graduation diploma or diploma copy of a long-cycle Master’s programme, or a second-cycle                   programme with instruction in Polish or a foreign language, or an equivalent diploma: 
            - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 15 points,
            - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 10 points,
            - grade 4.0 in the diploma – 5 points,
            - grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points,

          ii. graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document certifying the completion of the                third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme: 
            - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 10 points, 
            - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 6 points,
            - grade 4.0 in the diploma – 3 points,
            - grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points,

    2) 
    grade in the diploma in other academic fields:

        i. 
    graduation diploma of a long-cycle Master’s programme, or a second-cycle programme with                  instruction in Polish or a foreign language, or an equivalent diploma: 
            - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 10 points,
            - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 6 points,
            - grade 4.0 in the diploma – 3 points,
            - grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points;

         ii. graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document certifying the completion of the                  third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme: 
             - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 5 points,
             - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 3 points,
             - 
    grade 4.0 in the diploma – 1 points,
             - 
    grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points, 

  6. documents confirming the highest quality of academic achievements – for applicants holding a graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document confirming the completion of a third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme – 0-5 points, 

  7. qualification interview score 0-35 points.
It is recommended for the research proposal (point 2 of the criteria) not to exceed 1500 words and to include the following elements:
  • Introduction outlining the area of research, motivations for the choice of the research problem and its significance for the development of a given discipline of science.
  • Short literature survey, key readings on a given research problem indicating research gaps to be filled by the applicant.
  • Key research questions which break down into smaller elements the research problem addressed by the applicant
  • Research methods to be used for dealing with the research problem
  • Expected theoretical and practical outcomes of the selected research problem
Maximum number of points the applicant holder of a  degree in social sciences (economics and finance, political and administration sciences, management and quality sciences) may score in the admission procedure to the Doctoral School – 100 points
An applicant who does not meet point 7 may score a maximum of 90 points 
Minimum number of points an applicant must score in the admission procedure after stage 2 - 75 points
A necessary condition for positive qualification shall be scoring at least 45 points after stage 1.
 
 Documents:
 
Applicant to the Doctoral School in SGH shall submit the following documents (originals of the documents stipulated in subsections​ 2, 5, 7, 8  and 10 below, and originals or certified photocopies of the documents referred to in subsections 3, 4, 6, 9, 11 and 12, certified as true copies by an employee of the Doctoral School Office). 
  1. personal information form – a print-out from ISR system;
  2. application for admission to the Doctoral School (specifying the applicant’s preferences regarding the education programme);
  3. graduation diploma or diploma copy of a long-cycle Master’s programme, or a second-cycle programme with instruction in Polish or a foreign language, or an equivalent diploma or, for the persons mentioned in Article 186(2) of the LHES Act, a graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document certifying that the applicant has completed the third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme; 
  4. for a diploma issued by a foreign university, a document should be submitted certifying recognition of the foreign diploma by NAWA
  5. CV including academic achievements (in particular, academic publications, participations in academic conferences, awards and distinctions, internships); ​
  6. the achievements mentioned in the CV should be documented in the following manner: 
     - ​participation in conferences: certificates or programmes confirming active participation,
     - participation in research projects: a grant award decision or copy of a grant agreement, or                      a  certificate describing the nature of participation in a project,
    - cacademic publications (article in a journal: the first page of the article; book: the title page                     and  the  editorial page; chapter in a book: table of contents and the first page of the article); 
  7.  motivation letter in which the applicant specifies the scope of their academic interests;
  8. doctoral dissertation research proposal (including preferences regarding the academic discipline), containing, among other things, the motives behind the choice of the research problem and its significance for the academic field concerned, a brief overview of the literature, including the indication of the research gaps the applicant intends to fill, principal research questions and research methods, expected theoretical and practical outcomes of the research problem solution;
  9. certificate or other document confirming proficiency in a modern  foreign language at a minimum of B2 level; for programmes with instruction in English, a certificate or other document confirming proficiency in English at C1 level; for foreign applicants seeking education in Polish, a certificate or other document confirming proficiency in Polish at C1 level;
  10. opinion on the research competences of the applicant, issued by an independent research worker involved in the academic discipline which the applicant is going to study and meeting the conditions required of a supervisor pursuant to the LHES Act
  11. for applicants for the Implementation Doctorate programme – a document confirming that a person admitted to the Doctoral School under the programme is or will be employed on a full-time basis by the entity issuing the document, including the entity’s consent to the person’s education at the Doctoral School under the programme.
  12. for applicants holding a graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document confirming the completion of a third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme – documents confirming the highest quality of their academic achievements.
In the case of documents submitted through a postal operator, the date of receipt thereof at SGH Warsaw School of Economics shall determine whether the deadline has been met.

Admission to the Doctoral School (first and second stage) - June 30, 2020 - July 30, 2020

On-line Admission System will be open on June 30, 2020 and shut down on  July 14, 2020, 4 pm.
 
The deadline for submitting documents in the University organisational unit supporting the Doctoral School:
  1. to submit documents: register correctly in the ISR, upload documents, generate and print a personal questionnaire;
  2. a complete set of documents (together with a personal questionnaire) should be submitted within from June 30, 2020 to July 14, 2020, 4 pm.
 
Interviews will be scheduled starting from July 28, 2020. Information for applicants concerning the time and place of the interview will be posted on the University website and sent to the indicated applicant's e-mail address at seven days before the scheduled interview date.
 
The limit of admissions in the academic year 2020/2021 shall be 8 persons in each of the five programmes of the Doctoral School:
  • Economics and Finance in the scope of Economics in Polish
  • Economics and Finance in the scope of Finance in Polish
  • Political and Administration Sciences in Polish
  • Management and Quality Sciences with instruction in English​  

Results of the admission procedure
 
The order of admission of applicants to the Doctoral School within the established limit of places shall be determined by the ranking list drawn up pursuant to the scores of particular applicants in the admission procedure.
 
The ranking list shall be announced by July 30, 2020 by being drawn up on a notice board and published on the University website.  The list shall indicate the total score of each applicant.
 
The place of announcing results of the admission procedure: SGH Warsaw School of Economics, Education Organisation Division, building G, room 37, Madalinskiego 6/8, 02-513 Warsaw.
 
An applicant who qualified for placement on the list of doctoral students at the Doctoral
School shall be required to submit statements in writing to 7 September, 2020, 4 pm to the effect that:

1) the Doctoral School at SGH is the only doctoral school he/she will attend;

2) the applicant holds (does not hold) a doctor’s degree, and that in the event
information on the possession of a doctor’s degree is withheld, the applicant
undertakes to return unlawfully obtained doctoral scholarship money;

3) the applicant is not employed as an academic teacher or research worker,
subject to the circumstances referred to in Article 209(10), second sentence, of
the LHES Act.
