 SGH Doctoral School

The purpose of SGH Doctoral School is to provide support in conducting the research needed for writing and defending doctoral theses as well as to convey cutting-edge world knowledge in the selected areas of social sciences and research methodology in terms of the learning outcomes of qualification level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework.
 
 
 
 

SGH is authorised to confer the scientific degree of doktor of social sciences in the following fields:
  • Economics and Finance,
  • Management and Quality Sciences,
  • Political and Administration Sciences.

Education in the Doctoral School shall comprise: a study curriculum and an Individual Research Plan.

The study curriculum in the Doctoral School is offered in three fields and in four programmes:
  • Economics and Finance in the scope of Economics, 
  • Economics and Finance in the scope of Finance,
  • Political and Administration Sciences,
  • Management and Quality Sciences 
The education is offered in one of two profiles, which include:
  • general academic profile,
  • “business doctorate” profile for doctoral students participating in the “implementation doctorate” programme announced in the Communication of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of 29 May 2019.

The general academic profile is addressed to holders of a master’s degree or an equivalent one; in exceptional circumstances, warranted by the highest quality of their scientific accomplishments, also to graduates of first-degree studies and students who have completed the third year of a long-cycle master's degree programme, in particular managers and beneficiaries of research projects financed by competition grants offered by third parties (such as National Science Centre, National Centre for Research and Development, Ministry of Science and Higher Education) or a research project carried out at the SGH as part of the “Diamond Grant” programme. The classes will be held in the Polish or English languages.​​

On studying in the Doctoral School
 
Education in the Doctoral School shall last 8 semesters
 
The study curriculum in the Doctoral School shall include the following courses:
 
A. Common for all education programmes: the load of 74 obligatory hours::
1. Writing and publishing research articles
2. Researcher's workshop
3. Workshop on research methodology (adapted to the specificity of the discipline)
4. Philosophy of Science
5. Ethics in Science
6. Scientific seminar

B. Major (2 – 4 courses recommended)  (84 - 120  hours depending on the profile)
C. Support courses (62-64 hours – 90 hours depending on the profile)
D. Complementary courses (min. 2) (42 - 60 hours depending on the profile): 
E. Doctoral seminar, obligatory, the load of 60 hours
 
Total: 268 - 408 hours (depending on the profile)
 
Individual Research Plan (obligatory) (IPB) - prepared by the doctoral candidate in cooperation with the supervisor (supervisors) and the assistant supervisor, if appointed.
 
The Doctoral School shall educate high-class specialists for:
  • science, including higher education schools and scientific institutions,
  • business practice, in particular financial sector companies and institutions,
  • government and local government institutions, international organisations.

The participant of the Doctoral School, according to the selected study curriculum, shall gain advanced level knowledge of modern macroeconomics and microeconomics, management, finance, politics and administration, as well as current economic theories of enterprise and international economics.

A doctoral candidate shall acquire the skills of conducting independent research through learning about methodology, quantitative and qualitative methods in scientific research as well as of popularising research findings and shall develop the necessary social competences. Curricula for each of 4 doctoral programmmes are defined.

 

 Supplementary Admission to the Doctoral School at SGH

 


Supplementary admission for two programmes (general academic profile):

Applicants

An applicant entered into the admission procedure should be a holder of the professional title of magister, magister inżynier or its equivalent or of a diploma of completion of a first cycle programme or should hold a document confirming the completion of the third year of a long cycle graduate programme for persons stipulated in art. 186.2 of the PSWiN act (the act of 20 July 2018 - the Law on Higher Education and Science; Journal of Laws item 1668, as amended).

 Admission procedure

Applicant registration shall be conducted using the On-line School Registration System (IRS): https://isr.sgh.waw.pl/

A correct applicant registration in ISR shall be a necessary condition for starting his/her admission procedure.

The candidate is admitted to the recruitment proceedings provided that he or she:
  • registration in the IRS on time (period of time specified in the resolution of the committee) and uploaded in the IRS scans of documents under relevant tabs in JPG or PDF formats specified in par. 8 subpar. 3 Resolution no. 67 ;
  • paid the recruitment fee referred to in par. 10 Resolution no. 67 (PLN 200)​;
  • has:
    a) Master’s title or an equivalent title obtained on the grounds of separate provisions, or, in compliance with his or her declaration, will have such a title until the date set by the resolution of the committee,
    or
    b) is the manager of the research project implemented at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics within the programme “Diamond Grant”, referred to in 6 Article 318 par. 2 of the Act of 3 July 2018 – Provisions implementing the Act – the Law on Higher Education and Science, or 
    c) in exceptional cases justified with the highest quality of scientific achievements, is the graduate of the first cycle degree studies or a student that has completed the third year of the long-cycle Master’s degree programme;
  • has a valid certificate referred to in par. 8 subpar. 3 point 8 Resolution no. 67;
  • will present the opinion referred to in par. 8 subpar. 3 point 5 Resolution no. 67​;
 
Admission to the Doctoral School shall involve two stages:
First admission stage: substantial analysis of the documents submitted by the applicant and a decision of qualification of the candidate for the second stage – with no candidate participation.
Second admission stage: a structured interview with the candidate.
  
​Assessment criteria
 Assessment criteria and scores in particular criteria in the admission procedure:
​   
    1. a description of the research planned in the doctoral dissertation
0-40 points
         - Introduction outlining the area of research, motivations for the choice of the research                                         problem and  its  significance for the development of a given discipline of science (0-5 points).
             - Short literature survey, key readings on a given research problem indicating research gaps to be                       filled by the applicant (0-10 points).
               - Key research questions which break down into smaller elements the research                                                    problem addressed  by   the applicant (0-15 points).
                 - Research methods to be used for dealing with the research problem (0-5 points).
                    Expected theoretical and practical outcomes of the selected research problem​ (0-5 points).

                2. 
          for documented scientific achievements in the field of social sciences, the candidate with a diploma of              the long-cycle Master’s degree programme or the second cycle degree programme:
                     
                    a) scientific publications:
           ​               – in scientific journals included in the list of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education,
                          – author’s monographs,
                         –  author’s chapters in scientific monographs,
                          –  co-author’s chapters in scientific monographs

                   5 points for the publication, but not more than 10 for the category​.

                     b) research projects:
                          – acting as the research project manager (5 point),
                          – acting as a contractor in a research project  (3 point).​

                     c) conferences: 
                          ​ – active participation in national conferences (with a presentation of a     ​                    ​                                           paper, a poster, participation in a panel) and active participation in ​                                                                     conferences abroad  or  international conferences (with a presentation of a paper, a poster,                                participation in a panel) (3 points).
                           – passive participation (without a presentation) (0 point)
           
                can obtain: 0-10 points in total. 

                 3. 
          grade in the academic graduation diploma:

                     1) grade in the diploma in the field of social sciences: ​​

                         i. graduation diploma or diploma copy of a long-cycle Master’s programme, or a second-cycle                              programme with instruction in Polish or a foreign language, or an equivalent diploma: 
                             - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 15 points,
                             - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 10 points,
                             - grade 4.0 in the diploma – 5 points,
                             - grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points,

                         ii. graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document certifying the completion of the                             third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme: 
                             - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 10 points, 
                             - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 6 points,
                             - grade 4.0 in the diploma – 3 points,
                             - grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points,

                     2) 
          grade in the diploma in other academic fields:

                         i. 
          graduation diploma of a long-cycle Master’s programme, or a second-cycle programme with                              instruction in Polish or a foreign language, or an equivalent diploma: 
                            - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 10 points,
                            - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 6 points,
                            - grade 4.0 in the diploma – 3 points,
                            - grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points;

                         ii. graduation diploma of a first-cycle programme or a document certifying the completion of the                             third year of a long-cycle Master’s programme: 
                             - grade 5.0 or higher in the diploma – 5 points,
                             - grade 4.5 in the diploma – 3 points,
                             - 
          grade 4.0 in the diploma – 1 points,
                             - 
          grade 3.5 or 3 in the diploma – 0 points, 

                4. Documents confirming the highest quality of scientific achievements – in the case of candidates with a            diploma of graduating first cycle degree studies or a document confirming completing the third year of              the long-cycle Master’s degree programme:

                    a) scientific publications:      
                         – in scientific journals included in the list of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education
                         – author’s monographs
                        –  author’s chapters in scientific monographs
                         –  co-author’s chapters in scientific monographs

                    5 points for the publication, but not more than 15 for the category​ 

                    b) research projects
                        – acting as the research project manager (5 point)
                        – acting as a contractor in a research project  (3 point).

                    c) conferences:
                         – active participation in national conferences (with a presentation of a paper, a poster, participation                      in a panel) and active participation in conferences abroad  or  international conferences (with a                        presentation of a paper, a poster, participation in a panel) (0-3 points)

          can obtain:
           0-15 points in total. ​

                 5. 
          An interview, during which the committee asks and assesses 2 questions:
            a) question no. 1 from the subject matter of the research planned: 0-15 points,
            b) question no. 2 from the discipline of the programme for which the candidateapplies: 0-20 points
          The assessment covers only the achievements that are properly documented and do not raise any doubts, as well as that have been entered into proper tabs or fields in the recruitment form.

          It is recommended for the research proposal (point 1 of the criteria) not to exceed 1500 words and to include the following elements:
          • Introduction outlining the area of research, motivations for the choice of the research problem and its significance for the development of a given discipline of science.
          • Short literature survey, key readings on a given research problem indicating research gaps to be filled by the applicant.
          • Key research questions which break down into smaller elements the research problem addressed by the applicant
          • Research methods to be used for dealing with the research problem
          • Expected theoretical and practical outcomes of the selected research problem
          Maximum number of points the applicant holder of a  degree in social sciences (economics and finance, political and administration sciences, management and quality sciences) may score in the admission procedure to the Doctoral School – 100 points
          An applicant who does not meet point 7 may score a maximum of 90 points 
          Minimum number of points an applicant must score in the admission procedure after stage 2 - 75 points
          A necessary condition for positive qualification shall be scoring at least 45 points after stage 1.
           
           Documents:
           
          Applicant to the Doctoral School in SGH shall submit the following documents (originals of the documents stipulated in subsections​ 1-5, 9  and 10 below, and originals or certified photocopies of the documents referred to in subsections 3, 4, 6, 9, 11 i 12, certified as true copies by an employee of the Doctoral School Office). 
          1. personal questionnaire – print-out from the IRS;;
          2. application for admission to the Doctoral School (specifying the applicant’s preferences regarding the education programme);
          3. the covering letter in which the candidate specifies the scope of his or her scientific interests;
          4. ​​the description of the research planned in the doctoral dissertation (taking into account preferences regarding the scientific discipline) including, among others, the motive of selecting the research problem and its significance for the development of a given area of science, a short review of literature with an indication of research gaps which the candidate intends to fill in, main research questions and research methods, expected theoretical and practical results of solving the research problem;
          5. the opinion regarding scientific competences of the candidate issued by an independent scientific employee related to the scientific area within which the candidate will continue education, fulfilling the requirements from a supervisor specified in the Act on the LHES; 
          6. a diploma or an extract of a diploma of graduating the long-cycle Master’s degree programme or second cycle degree studies in Polish or in a foreign language, or, in the case of persons referred to in Article 186 par. 2 of the Act on the LHES, a diploma of graduating first cycle degree studies or a document confirming that the  candidate completed the third year of the long-cycle Master’s degree programme.If, at the moment of registration in the IRS, the candidate does not have a diploma, then, a scan of the certificate issued by the relevant deanery should be attached with the scan of the declaration that the diploma will be delivered on a ​date set by the committee;
          7. ​in the case of a diploma of a foreign university, a document confirming recognising the foreign diploma by NAWA should be presented;
          8. certificate confirming command of a modern language at least at B2 level; in the case of starting education in English a certificate or other document confirming command of this language at C1 level; in the case of starting education in Polish by a foreign candidate a certificate confirming command of this language at C1 level. The list of certificates constitutes annex no. 2 to the resolution;
          9. CV with a consideration of scientific achievements (in particular scientific publications, participation in scientific conferences, awards and distinctions, internships); achievements enumerated in the CV should be documented in the following manner: 
            a) participation in research projects: a decision on awarding the grant or a copy of a grant agreement, or a certificate specifying the character of the participation in the project,
            b) scientific publications (an article in a journal: the first page of the article, a book: the title page and the publication page, a chapter in a book: a table of contents and the first page of the article);
            c) participation in conferences: certificates or programmes confirming participation:
            – active (with a presentation of a paper, a poster, participation in a panel) or 
            passive (without a paper, a poster, participation in a panel);
          10. in the case of candidates applying for the business doctorate programme – a document confirming that the person admitted to the Doctoral School within the programme is or will be employed full-time by the entity issuing the document, with the consent of this entity to this person’s educationat the Doctoral School within the programme;
          11. in the case of candidates with a diploma of graduating first cycle degree studies or a document confirming completing the third year of the long-cycle Master’s degree programme – documents confirming the highest quality of scientific achievements.
                      In the case of documents submitted through a postal operator, the date of receipt thereof at SGH Warsaw School of Economics shall determine whether the deadline has been met.

                       Results of the admission procedure
                       
                      The order of admission of applicants to the Doctoral School within the established limit of places shall be determined by the ranking list drawn up pursuant to the scores of particular applicants in the admission procedure.
                       
                      The ranking list shall be announced by being drawn up on a notice board and published on the University website and IRS system. The list shall indicate the total score of each applicant.
